The Gardnerville Delinquents

A few good things came out of COVID. A group of neighbors living southwest of Foothill Lane started meeting every Friday under a tree to maintain their close relationships. They have kept this tradition going. I was fortunate to be invited to join the self-named “Gardnerville Delinquents” for food, drinks and enjoyable conversation.

4th of July Celebration in Genoa

The highlight of my day was listening to the patriot songs produced by the Carson Valley Symphony at the Old Mormon Fort. One enjoyable patriotic song after another. Hundreds of people attended this event as well.

4th of July at Zephyr Beach

I checked out the scene at Zephyr Beach to see how the recently approved Beer Garden and parking restrictions were working. I was shocked by the number of cars parked on the side of Highway 50. The were several hundred. People were walking a mile to get to the beach, some dangerously in the highway.

Douglas County Deputies and Aramark security guards were out in force at the beach. Trash cans and Porta Potties were abundant. I am looking forward to the official report but everything looked good while I was there.

Town of Minden 4th of July Barbeque and Bike Ride

The Town of Minden knows how to host a party. Several hundreds of people attended. There were water slides and other games for the kids, the barbeque was great and the line moved super-fast.

Freedom 5K Fun Run for the Wreath

Over 300 people participated in the Freedom 5K Fun Run, the most ever. I made the run, slowly jogging the entire way, but I knew I was in trouble when several ladies running with their dogs and several men pushing a stroller passed me by. Douglas County’s former Chief Financial Officer, Teri Willoughby, whizzed by me in an impressive show of speed and stamina.

The Kids Fishing Derby

The Kids Fishing Derby, hosted by the Kids Fishing Derby nonprofit organization, made a triumphant return this year with the Elks Club’s essential volunteer support. After a four-year break due to COVID-19 and a volunteer shortage, the event welcomed children aged three to twelve.

Run entirely by volunteers, the Derby aims to introduce kids to fishing and the great outdoors. Any leftover proceeds fund next year’s event. In appreciation, volunteers received a hat and lunch.

This year’s event was a hit, with nearly 1,000 children participating. Almost every child caught at least two fish, and every participant went home with a prize.

It was a fantastic day of fun, fishing, and sharing our community spirit!

Tark in the Park

Labor Day at the “Tark in the Park” barbeque was a great event across the board. I was able to meet many new constituents, several of which had concerns about different items dealing with the County, and I was able to personally explain what was going on. The most rewarding part was seeing so many young kids playing together on the two bounce houses and in the water park.
